Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review

Deadpool & Wolverine review: Lethal Weapon X

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (2024)

For all intents and purposes, this is a buddy cop style comedy. Everyone is having a great time as it envelopes itself within its source material…comics, while mining decades worth of Marvel movies for its snarky odd couple core. I start by writing this so that one doesn’t go into Deadpool & Wolverine expecting the bloated storyline to make any sense (it doesn’t). Which is good, because it really does take the backseat to some hilariously crude humour, excessively gory violence and clever cameos. Sure, in a non-Deadpool movie this might leave one wanting, but this is a Deadpool movie, in which chaos is the point and when the ride is intended to be fun, who needs reason? At its heart, D & W is a tribute to the Marvel franchise that spawned so many great characters and films (despite the current low point) and that love shines through. Easter eggs abound for the fanboys, yet the journey remains accessible should this be your first foray into the MCU.

WATCH OR NOT: WATCH

Additional musings: Should the self-reflexive Ryan Reynolds be given a pass for making yet another movie with a plot that hinges on the multiverse/time travel tropes? I thoroughly enjoyed the irreverence (especially Reynolds’ brand), but if we have learned anything from our collective jaunt into the multiverse, it’s that anything is possible. Anything. Meaning I’d love a future filled with movies without plot holes being constantly plugged up by alternate realities and timelines.
