BLACK MIRROR (2011-2025) – Eulogy
Black Mirror has often (and rightly) been compared to another science fiction anthology series The Twilight Zone (1959-1964); and like Black Mirror, not every episode was meant to induce dread and alarm. Sometimes they were, although haunting, downright sweet. I’m thinking specifically of The Twilight Zone Epiosde 101: The Changing of the Guard (1959), that tells the story of a gentle, all-boys’ school professor contemplating suicide; and before he can off himself, he is visited by some unique guests who give him cause to reconsider. It’s heartfelt and near impossible not to get choked up by this teacher who made a real difference in the lives these young men. Which brings me to Black Mirror’s Eulogy, Season 7, Episode 5 (2025). It too is sincere and bittersweet and great. Paul Giamatti – Sideways (2004), Cinderella Man (2005), The Holdovers (2023) – stars as Phillip, an isolated curmudgeon who’s contacted about the death of a past love. He’s invited to participate in an immersive AI experience that allows him to access past memories through old photos for memorial purposes. As the episode unfolds, we get to know Phillip and his story of “the one that got away”. Once again, technology and AI isn’t negatively portrayed, but is instead a thoughtful escort for Phillip as he wades through his happy and painful memories. Bravo to Black Mirror for this beautiful and original gift of entertainment.
