COMPANION (2025)
If you’ve seen the poster and considered the title, you can surmise the genre and baseline plot of this movie. You guessed it, our main character is a sexbot, played with lovely, “bring her home to mom” sensibilities by Sophie Thatcher, who is making some excellent choices, e.g. Heritic (2024), MaXXine (2024) and the Yellowjackets (since 2021) series. As Iris, opposite boyfriend Jack Quaid’s Josh, she sets out for a weekend getaway with Josh’s friends at a lavish cottage. Horrifying violence quickly ensues as our group of friends comically navigate a circumstance and world that is not at all far-fetched. Personally, I took Terminator (1984) and all of its successors to be a warning and a reality to avoid at all costs, but it looks as though we are charging headfirst towards AI reliance and companionship and making some fine films along the way.
WATCH OR NOT: WATCH
Additional musings: This is not a scary movie in the traditional horror sense, so strap in for an entertaining and comically cringe-inducing ride. As well, with films like this that take place in the near future, it’s getting harder to write obstacles that even our current technology couldn’t get around.
