Get Away Movie Review

Get Away Review: Not a bad trip

GET AWAY (2024)

Like many of you (I’m sure), I was immediately in when I saw Nick Frost’s name attached (as co-writer and lead) to another comedy horror film. If you’re like me, you only want more from a purveyor of Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). My only question, unfortunately being: Can he do this without his creative partner Simon Pegg?  Verdict: Get Away does not reach the level of either of these films, however if you’re open to a spoof on the horrors of the Airbnb industry, set in Sweden with the potential of Midsommar (2019) mindsets and locals who greet outsiders as warmly as those in The Wicker Man (1973) and American Werewolf in London (1981), then you’re in for a good time. Hand in hand with Frost’s quintessential dry British humour is his sarcastic wife (played by the hilarious Aisling Bea) who is either annoyed by or hot for “Daddy”, and their two teenage kids whose apathy goes toe to toe with Rusty and Audrey à la National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983). Altogether it amounts to a (very) bloody fun film, if you’re into that kind of thing.

WATCH OR NOT: WATCH

Additional musings: I hope Frost continues this mode of work in the comedy horror/parody category, as it is lacking in quantity and quality. His appreciation for this specific genre and adept sense of humour are always a welcome trip.
