HEART EYES (2025)
I like this movie. But I don’t like like it, if you know what I mean. I like that it’s a romantic-comedy-horror. A great idea that pleases both the blood thirsty romantic cynics and horror hopefuls. I like how the gender roles are swapped, with a female protagonist (Olivia Holt) who is perpetually post love affair, coupled with a potential mate (Mason Gooding) who desperately clings to optimism and all the corny overtures that go with it. I like the crude and violent comedy. I like the boss from hell who smiles like she’s chewing your soul and enjoying it (Michaela Watkins, dependably mining another part for the weird we didn’t know we wanted). I like the misdirection and fun it’s having, poking at Valentines Day, online dating, meet cutes, Instagram…all of it. But unfortunately, all of these pros are only on paper. In actuality, the leads have no real heat or comedic chemistry. The antagonist’s (new slasher villain Heart Eyes) motivation pales in comparison to the creativity of the endeavour as a whole and is quite frankly an insult to everyone to sticks around for the reveal. As I said. I like this movie, as in it could be great for someone else. But for me, it’s not love.
WATCH OR NOT: NOT
Additional musings: I love Scream (1996) and Scream 2 (1997), but why do moviemakers continually bite the best parts of these classics, essentially missing the point with more tested and tired horror troupes.
